About the program

E4 – ESL is a short intensive English language and culture program that introduces international students to American culture and academia while advancing their English communication skills. Students are exposed to the American higher education environment, and experience American campus life up close, at St. John’s University.

Why E4 – ESL?

Our program utilizes an immersive approach to language education. It includes English language classroom sessions and allows students to explore New York and experience it from various perspectives: culture, history, society, and entertainment. The experiences consist of visiting cultural sites, educational and inspirational meetings with community leaders, educators, as well as interacting with everyday citizens. Students will have the opportunity to put their English language skills to practice everyday in real-life situations. This allows them to expand their linguistic skills by refining and strengthening their grasp of the English language, improving their accent, and gaining cultural understanding. The ultimate goal is to empower them with a higher level of the English language, which they can use to drive their lives forward and tap into more opportunities in life.

Program Details

Academics:

Each morning, students attend three hours of English language lessons that integrate listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, and grammar. They engage in a variety of activities such as informal presentations, discussions, role-plays, and debates to maximize speaking and listening skills. Students focus on the requisite vocabulary and expressions for interacting with Americans in a variety of situations.

Students also learn simple ways to make their speech more native-like, in order to communicate more effectively with speakers of English. Students utilize technology tools to aid and improve learning. The content of these classes focuses on the activities scheduled for afternoon excursions, using the places to be visited within New York City as a springboard for learning.
